Greek Wineries and Vineyards that made it in the world’s top-100 in 2022 
Celebrating the European Wine Tourism Day in 12th of Nevember every year since 2009, the World’s Best Vineyards 2022 list was announced by William Reed, a 160-year-old UK publishing company, in an event held this year in Argentina’s wine capital, Mendoza. The list aims to reflect the diversity of the international wine landscape and provide a snapshot of the best destinations for unique wine tourism experiences, in addition to being a barometer for global wine tourism trends.
In this year’s announcement the innovative Antinori nel Chianti Classico in Tuscany, Italy, topped the list for the first time – actually it’s the first time a wine estate other than Zuccardi Valle de Uco from Argentina, has topped the World’s Best Vineyards list, now in its fourth year. Spain’s Bodegas de los Herederos del Marqués de Riscal with its longstanding history and breath-taking architecture took second place for two years in a row, whilst Chilean vineyards, Montes and VIK Winery, followed.
France and Portugal had the highest overall split of vineyards with each taking 11 spots on this year’s Top 100 list. The 2022 list includes more countries than ever before with 20 from all six continents featured. It also includes exciting first-time entrants from India, Bulgaria and Greece – highlighting the recent growth in wine tourism and there were more English entries than ever before.
The three Greek vineyards that made it in the top 100 list are:
- Estate Argyros on the island of Santorini, established in 1903 by the Argyros family who has a tradition of wine making that dates to the 19th century – at number 40
- Ktima Gerovassiliou created by Vangelis Gerovassiliou in 1981, reviving the family vineyard in the area of Epanomi, located near the city of Thessaloniki, Northern Greece – at number 58 and
- Domaine Sigalas created by pioneer winemaker Paris Sigalas in Santorini whoapplied mathematics to oenology and viticulture with his company’s vintage wine was the first Greek one to be labelled PDO – at number 89.
Earlier in the year, three wineries in Greece had been named among the world’s top 100 wineries of 2022 by Wine & Spirits Magazine. A prestigious US magazine, Wine & Spirits every year presents the best wineries in the world as selected by its wine journalists and critics. The magazine vetted thousands of producers in its two-step, blind-tasting process to highlight the top 100 for their collections of outstanding wines.
The most wineries (38) on the 2022 list are located in the United States. France and Italy follow with 18 and 14 respectively. The “World’s Top 100 Wineries 2022” list also includes Greece’s Alpha Estate, Lyrarakis Wines and Vassaltis Vineyards (it is worth noting that last year’s corresponding list hosted 4 Greek wineries, of which only Alpha Estate is here again):
- Alpha Estate was founded in 1997 by experienced viticulturist Makis Mavridis and chemist-oenologist Angelos Iatridis, who, after years of experience in various locations of Greece, chose the Amyndeon, Florina region to create his own wine.
- Lyrarakis Wines is a family winery located in the area of Peza, near Heraklion, Crete. It has been producing high-quality wines since 1966 including rare local varieties. Lyrarakis has revived two ancient Cretan varieties: the white wines Dafni and Plyto.
- Vassaltis Vineyards in Santorini, Cyclades, carries a long tradition but a new winery: in 2010 Yannis Valambous took over the vineyards he inherited from his father to transform them into a thoroughly modern, state-of-the-art boutique winery and craft exquisite wines. Vassaltis Winery was completed in 2016 and today combines traditional winemaking with the operational needs of a sleek, state-of-the-art winery capable of yielding exceptional wines that showcase the best of Santorini.

Γιορτάζοντας την Ευρωπαϊκή Ημέρα Οινοτουρισμού στις 12 Νοεμβρίου κάθε χρόνο από το 2009, η λίστα με τους World’s Best Vineyards 2022 list ανακοινώθηκε από τον William Reed, μια βρετανική εκδοτική εταιρεία 160 ετών, σε μια εκδήλωση που πραγματοποιήθηκε φέτος στην οινική πρωτεύουσα της Αργεντινής, Mendoza. Η λίστα στοχεύει να αντικατοπτρίζει την ποικιλομορφία του διεθνούς οινοτουρισμού και να παρέχει μια στιγμιότυπο των καλύτερων προορισμών για μοναδικές οινοτουριστικές εμπειρίες, εκτός από το να είναι ένα βαρόμετρο για τις παγκόσμιες οινοτουριστικές τάσεις.
Η λίστα του 2022 περιλαμβάνει περισσότερες χώρες από ποτέ με 20 και από τις έξι ηπείρους. Περιλαμβάνει επίσης συναρπαστικούς εισερχόμενους για πρώτη φορά από την Ινδία, τη Βουλγαρία και την Ελλάδα – υπογραμμίζοντας την πρόσφατη ανάπτυξη του οινοτουρισμού και τις περισσότερες αγγλικές συμμετοχές από ποτέ.
ΑΜΠΕΛΩΝΕΣ
Οι τρεις ελληνικοί αμπελώνες που μπήκαν στους 100 καλύτερους είναι:
- Κτήμα Αργυρού / Estate Argyros στο νησί της Σαντορίνης από το 1903 – στη θέση 40
- Κτήμα Γεροβασιλείου / Ktima Gerovassiliou δημιουργήθηκε από τον Βαγγέλη Γεροβασιλείου το 1981, στην Επανομή, κοντά στην Θεσσαλονίκη – στον αριθμό 58 και
- Κτήμα Σιγάλα / Domaine Sigalas επίσης από τη Σαντορίνη, με το λανσάρισμα του vintage κρασιού της εταιρείας του να είναι το πρώτο ελληνικό ΠΟΠ – στη θέση 89.
ΟΙΝΟΠΟΙΕΙΑ
Νωρίτερα στη χρονιά, το “Wine & Spirits” – ένα από τα σημαντικότερα Μέσα όσον αφορά το κρασί διεθνώς – δημοσίευσε την ετήσια λίστα του top 100 wineries of 2022 by Wine & Spirits Magazine. Κάθε χρόνο, η λίστα περιλαμβάνει εκείνα τα οινοποιεία που ξεχωρίζουν σε διάφορες περιοχές, σε όλο τον κόσμο, ελέγχοντας και αξιολογώντας χιλιάδες παραγωγούς και τα κρασιά τους. Τη μερίδα του λέοντος στα Top 100 Wineries of 2022 καταλαμβάνουν οι ΗΠΑ, με 38 εκπροσώπους στη λίστα (έναντι 35 στην αξιολόγηση του 2021). Ακολουθούν η Γαλλία και η Ιταλία με 18 και 14 αντίστοιχα.
Η οινική Ελλάδα έχει παρουσία στη λίστα με 3 οινοποιεία: το Κτήμα Άλφα (Αμύνταιο Φλώρινας), το Οινοποιείο Λυραράκης (Κρήτη) και το Οινοποιείο Βασάλτης (Σαντορίνη) είναι τα τρία ελληνικά οινοποιεία που περιλαμβάνονται. Αξίζει ωστόσο να σημειωθεί πως η περσινή αντίστοιχη λίστα φιλοξενούσε 4 ελληνικά οινοποιεία, εκ των οποίων μόνο το Κτήμα Άλφα είναι και πάλι φέτος (διαβάστε περισσότερα στο Αθηνόραμα)
